According to the zoo sources, the female jaguar is ready for mating and has given signals for the same. But Arya, the male jaguar has not shown interest till date. Director of Alipore Zoo, Ashish Kumar Samanta said, "We have seen Malala, the female jaguar, showing interest in mating. But Arya has not shown any interest."
The female jaguar is ready for mating when she is about two years old. For the males though, it takes a longer - when they are around three years old. Mating can take place during any time of the year. According to the zoo workers, jaguars are solitary animals. They live and hunt alone, except during the mating season.
In the zoo, a barrier is used to keep the two jaguars apart. But when Malala started giving signals to the male jaguar, the barrier was removed. According to zoo sources, Arya did enter the cage of the female, but then returned to his own cage within a few minutes.
Zoo authorities say there is no plan to use any medicine to help them mate. Zoo director Samanta said, "Medication may may cause side effects. We want them to be normal."
