Mumbai: BMC razes unauthorised portion of Leopold Cafe in Colaba
Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Wednesday pulled down the unauthorised portions of the iconic Leopold Cafe in Colaba Causeway. The decision was taken after the cafe failed to submit a copy of the permission sought by the civic body.
Kiran Dighavkar, Assistant Municipal Commissioner, ‘A’ ward, said the move was necessary because the establishment did not seek any permission and neither did the owners furnish any reply. “The administration had written to the establishment and gave 24 hours to either stop the work or seek necessary permission. We did not receive any reply and the work that was carried out was unauthorised, so it required to be demolished,” he said. He also added that the repair work was obstructing the footpath outside the cafe and posed a danger to pedestrians.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Tuesday had served a notice under Section 354 (A) of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act 1888, to the owner of the Leopold Cafe in Colaba Causeway after civic officials found slabs being placed at the canopy level above the pedestrian footpath of the cafe without its permission. On Wednesday, a portion of the under-construction slab was pulled down. Demolition continued on Thursday as six labourers were engaged in razing the slab with the help of required arsenal when Free Press Journal visited the site. Despite repeated attempts to trace a spokesperson of Leopold Cafe, he was not available.
