Nagpur: Nagpur University Pro-Vice Chancellor Pramod Yeole on Monday said applications for Ideal Teacher award would be routed through exam section to ensure only candidates with a clean record were selected.

A day after NU announced the names of the awardees, two were found to be with 'dubious credentials'. Later, the NU withdrew the nomination of principal of GS College of Commerce in Wardha Abdul Bari, who was debarred from exam work for two years in 2015.

Yeole told reporters necessary precaution would be taken in future to avoid such controversies. "Norms for selection will be changed. Since I was the dean when this case happened, the decision was amended," he said in a press conference organized by NU's department of Hindi.

Though Yeole sought to defend the NU, the fact that Bari was selected despite only 37 teachers being in the fray raises questions. NU insiders said there were five more dubious candidates but those got eliminated during screening by the selection committee.

On the name of another lecturer working with Sant Gadge Maharaj Mahavidyala, Yeole said, "Individual can't be blamed since the action was taken against the management." The Hingna college management led by chairman Sudhakar Moglewar was accused of allegedly assaulting and manhandling the vigilance squad when it visited their premises during summer 2006 examinations.

Meanwhile, the department of Hindi would be hosting 43th session of Bharatiya Hindi Parishad for the first time since its inception in 1958. Head of the department Pramod Sharma said the NU's last attempt to host the global conference was marred by then HoD's death and the event got cancelled.

The three-day conference on 'Sahitya aur Media: Vartamaan Sandarbh' would be attended by Hindi scholars, professors, researchers, connoisseurs, and journalists from across the world from September 7 to 9. The conference has been divided into six themes including social media, media and cinema.

Conference coordinator Manoj Pandey and NU coordinator Shyam Dhond too were present during the press meet.

Screening system for recruitment

ProVC Pramod Yeole on Monday said the NU was planning to introduce a screening system for recruitment of Grade I, II and III employees but the modalities were yet to be finalized. Asked if NU would be holding an aptitude test, Yeole said, "No decision on the issue has been taken." He said the NU received hundreds of applications and wanted to ensure everyone got a fair chance.

NU to help Chhattisgarh varsity

Despite the failure and embarrassment in Mumbai University case, NU is again planning to take up evaluation of over 5000 answer books of Chhattisgarh University. In July, VC had to help Mumbai University in evaluating over 2lakh answerbooks but the move boomeranged as the Dhanwate National College, which was entrusted with the job, couldn't process even 10% of the work. "This time, the NU is taking the responsibility. Before a final decision is taken we want to ensure the process would be smooth," Yeole said.

In Mumbai case, several hurdles like software problems, server issues and examiners' comfort level with the system were overlooked while undertaking the task.
