Pune: Even a month after Mumbai's Elphinstone Road station stampede, which took 22 lives, the Pune rail officials are struggling to control the crowd on the old foot over bridge (FOB) at the Pune Junction.Following the stampede in Mumbai, brought on by overcrowding on a pedestrian bridge, the rail ministry had instructed officials of different divisions to take precautionary measures. The old FOB at the Pune Junction was identified as one that needs to reduce crowding.While several steps have been put in place to avert untoward incidents, the officials accept that most people still use the old FOB. "We have taken precautions.
However, despite notices and frequent announcements, most people coming to the station continue to use the old FOB and ignore the two newer bridges. In the afternoons and the evenings, there are heavy crowds on the old FOB. But we are trying to manage that.
