Well, it's not uncommon on Anna Main Road in KK Nagar, where the city corporation has openly allowed encroachment of pavements and public space by establishments and even an Amma canteen.
The corporation allotted nearly 20 shops in 1997 on the Anna Main road. But these shops were set up on pavements resulting in encroachment. Of the 20 shops, every alternate shop housed a manhole and the civic body had not taken any action to remove it in the past 20 years.
Tea vendors, road side eateries, mobile phone shops and stationery shops have been running over these drains for the past two decades. When TOI questioned the representatives at the Amma Unavagam, an official said, "We have been serving the people and several hungry people have benefited by us. It doesn't matter if it is an encroachment."
R Ravi, a shopkeeper on Anna Main Road, said he had petitioned the civic body and requested them to shift the manholes from their shops.
"These are not connected to any of our shops and they only carry rainwater. They can be sealed. Several politicians and MLAs had promised us that these manholes would be shifted. But no such steps were taken," he said.
Gopalakrishnan V, a social worker, who had filed a complaint with the CM's cell, said, "While the civic body cleared silt from drains, there are still drains inside these buildings which pose a huge risk. These shops also causes traffic jam. I have complained to the corporation and police as well. But no steps have been taken."
Acknowledging the encroachment, the government replied stating that it was the corporation that allotted these shops to roadside vendors and there were sufficient manholes outside the pavements which can be used to carry out routine desilting work. The reply said they had informed police to take necessary action regarding traffic issues.
Corporation officials said they would find alternative locations for these shops.
