The deceased woman, who police identified as Maheshwari, was alone with her intellectually challenged son in the ground floor flat at Kannappa Nagar when the murder is believed to have been committed. Her husband Annamalai, a retired auditor, was at Tambaram for some work and their daughter Kavitha, 21, was away at work.
Around 8pm, Kavitha came home and found the front door open. She kept calling out for her mother as she stood in the hall but in vain. She then went into the bedroom and found Maheswari's blood-stained body under the cot.
Kavitha immediately alerted her father and then called the KK Nagar police. A team arrived at the spot with sniffer dogs and conducted an inspection. Police, who began scanning CCTV camera footage collected from apartment complexes and shop sin from the locality, believe someone known to the victim could be behind the murder as there was no signs of a forced entry. None of the woman's neighbours in the apartment complex noticed any suspicious person entering, an officer said.
Annamalai had recently retired from a Mount Road-headquartered firm where he worked as an auditor, the officer added.
